UmaUma Dekiru Trance wo Tsukette Mita 2 (henceforth known as UmaUma Trance 2) is the sequel to the first UmaUma Trance. The series collects songs that have been popularized online through internet memes. The title of this series in particular comes from the chorus of Caramell’s “Caramelldansen.”

Now, UmaUma Trance has a rather sordid history. It started its existance as NicoNico Dekiru Trance wo Tsukutte Mita, and was originally released in February of 2008. NicoNico Douga is Japan’s equivalent of YouTube, and the album mostly featured songs that were popular on NicoNico. Unfortunately, the album was not officially licensed, so when NicoNico caught wind of it they demanded that Quake stop selling it. Quake complied with the request. However, the album had already been on store shelves for a day, so not all units could be recalled.

Fast-forward to April 2008, when Quake re-released NicoNico Trance with a slightly revised track list and a new, non-copyright-infringing title: UmaUma Dekiru Trance wo Tsukutte Mita. This proved to be a stroke of luck for Quake, as the original NicoNico Trance did not actually have “Caramelldansen” on it at all, and the song ended up being one of the reasons that the album sold so well (about 20,000 units in its first two weeks). Quake would also go on to release a Caramelldansen single as well as an entire sped-up album, both of which also sold quite well.

The irony of all this? NicoNico would later release their own CD after seeing how well UmaUma Trance did, and they licensed “Caramelldansen” from Quake. 😛

The tentative track list for UmaUma Trance 2 is below. A friend and I scoured the depths of NicoNico Douga to find the related memes on NicoNico. Note that you’ll need a NicoNico account to view the videos. Also, prepare to be scarred for life.

02. Nouen no Hanayome – Seems to be related to Dragon Quest.
03. Roma Saga Kaze Radio Taisou – Another v
04. Shimauta – A bit unclear about this one. This is the closest we could find.
05. Kotoba ni Dekinai – WTF?
06. Jounetsu Tairiku – It’s a horse. Playing musical instruments.
07. Souryo no Aquarion – The only song more overexposed than “Caramelldansen” returns with monk vocals. I’m not kidding.
08. Gacchaman no Uta – *shrug*
09. Hitomi wo Tojite – Sounds like a Vocaloid song.
10. Donaemon no Uta – I’ll never look at Ronald the same way again.
11. Me ga Au Shunkan – This one could actually make sense as a trance song.
12. I’m Lovin’ It – More McDo trance.

………….yeah, I don’t get it either. I have absolutely no idea how Quake will manage to make some of those into viable trance songs.
