EDM ~Electronic Dance Madness~ 3 – Final Release Info

EDM ~Electronic Dance Madness~ 3
Release Date: 3/13/13 ? 3/20/13
Price: 2190 yen

The third release in the EDM series was delayed a week to March 20. Expect EDM hits from David Guetta, Deadmau5, Moby, Calvin Harris, and…Duran Duran?! I wish Tomo Hirata would choose some more recent songs, though. I’m sure EMI force him to choose from their catalogue, but there’s really no reason to have “Teenage Dream” on a 2013 album. -_-

On a related note, EMI Music Japan were recently acquired by Universal Japan as part of Universal’s global acquisition of EMI. It’ll be very interesting to see how the acquisition will affect EMI’s compilations in the future. At best, it means they’ll be able to draw on Universal’s large catalogue of artists. At worst, they’ll neglect EMI altogether. 🙁

Update: An interview with Tomo Hirata confirms that EDM 4 is already in the works.

EMI was already a goner before Universal brought them out, so this was no surprise. Might see Dancemania sporting the Universal label logo now.

I hope the acquisition just means more variety for series like EDM and V.I.P., and maybe our first 2013 release of Dancemania!

The thing with Universal is that they have their own series of compilations going, so I’m wondering if they’ll allow EMI to exist separately or fold their catalogue into their releases. They just launched EDM Anthem in direct opposition to EDM, but their What’s Up series has been competing with V.I.P. for a while now. And DJ Kaori’s Mix albums have been big sellers for years. I resisted covering them in the past due to their more R&B nature, but as with V.I.P. they’ve been focusing more on dance/EDM lately so maybe I’ll do some posts on them in the near future.

Here’s the more troubling bit for EMI fans: during the course of the acquisition a lot of EMI’s assets in Europe were sold to Warner. Apparently this included EMI subsidiaries in Sweden and Denmark, plus Parlophone in the UK, which was home to David Guetta, Coldplay, and Kylie (basically half of EMI’s EDM albums, lol). The sale hasn’t finished yet, and it’s unclear how the sale affects licensing in Japan, but there’s a chance EMI Japan’s compilations could feature radically different artists in the future.
