Pete Beat Manifesto EP
Artist: Pete Ellison
Release Date: 7/30/2014
Price: FREE!

It’s been over a year since Disko Warp closed up shop, but founder Pete Ellison has still been releasing music under his main persona. The latest release from Pete is a free EP that’s available on the Tokyo-based label, Data Fruits. It’s definitely a slower, groovier sound than his previous Disko Warp fare.

Radio Gosha x Disko Warp: Living a Colorful Life
Release Date: 3/15/13
Price: $12 (Digital Album Only) or $25 (CD+DVD)

A new CD+DVD set compiling Radio Gosha’s music videos for Disko Warp as well as a bonus remix CD. The remix CD is available digitally, on Disko Warp’s Bandcamp page, Amazon MP3, or iTunes.

I got my copy last week and the remixes are amazing. DJ Command delivered an awesomely energetic Eurobeat remix of “Space Space Shooter” with a few hyper techno influences to boot. Meanwhile, DJ Shimamura’s Speed Trance/Hardcore remix of “Oh Oh Oh Sexy Vampire” turned out even more epic than I imagined it would. Other stand-out tracks include the Rainbowdragoneyes chiptune remix of “Hej Sokoly” and J-Mi & Midi-D’s BPM-shifting remix of “Pussy Game.”

Disko Warp presents Hardcore Advance ~Nonstop Hardcore × Hyper Techno
Release Date: 3/15/2013
Price: 12 USD

Disko Warp’s latest release will be a non-stop mix CD in the vein of Dancemania Speed. And just like Dancemania these days, it’s all repeats! Kidding aside, there are actually 4 new songs, including a 2013 update of “Lolitabot.” That explains Lolitabot’s appearance on the cover art, illustrated once again by Chevi. Other new tracks include remixes by Francisco Gaitan and J-Mi & Midi-D, plus a new Initial P production. The rest of the track list includes some of Disko Warp’s biggest hits, as well as remixes by DJ Command, Honmax, and others.

A physical CD is available for $15, and includes downloads of full-length tracks. Otherwise, the digital version of the non-stop mix is $12.

Radio Gosha x Disko Warp: Living a Colorful Life
Release Date: 3/2013
Price: ???

Hot off the heels of their successful Hardcore Advance Kickstarter, Disko Warp are back with a new Kickstarter for a special DVD collaboration with Radio Gosha. The DVD will compile all 7 of the Disko Warp music videos animated by GoshaDole. There’ll also be a bonus CD featuring the tracks from the music videos as well as 7 new, exclusive remixes “by top producers from around the world.” I’m hoping that means a new DJ Command remix. 😀 Bonus items range from postcards to stickers and keychains. Minimum pledge for the CD+DVD set is $25. There are only 8 days left to pledge since they wanted the CD+DVD sets produced in advance of Spring conventions, so be quick!

While I’m at it, there are only 48 hours left on Radio Gosha’s T-shirt Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/radiogosha/radio-gosha-presents-ufo-catcher-and-pussy-game-sh

Disko Warp presents Untitled Video Game Compilation
Artist: Initial P
Release Date: ??/??/12
Price: ???

Recently announced on the Disko Warp twitter page, Disko Warp’s next album will feature covers of video game songs. Apparently it’ll feature covers of vocal songs only, so it’ll be interesting to see what songs make the final list. Guest artists include Ani-Rock!, J-Mi & Midi-D, Reni Mimura, Vandalet. It also sounds like there’ll be another Kickstarter for a physical release, so be on the lookout for that near the end of this month.

Light My Gasoline EP
Artist: Initial P
Release Date: 8/9/12
Price: $7.92

Brand new EP from Initial P featuring 3 original songs plus remixes for a total of 8 tracks. Guest vocalists include Laura Chick, J-Mi, and Vandalet. Also includes remixes by Francisco Gaitan and Doughboy.

The lead track is a fun eurobeat-ish song with some chiptune influences. I was hoping the lyrics would avoid the word “fire” and poke fun at the genre’s tendency of overusing the word, but I guess it’s not a eurobeat song unless every other word is rhymed with “fire”. The second track is a more traditional hardcore remix. Meanwhile, Argentinian producer, Francisco Gaitan, provides a Hyper Techno remix and Doughboy offers up another fast-paced hardcore remix.

If all that wasn’t enough, there’s also a brand new hardcore track, “Me or Susan?” sung by J-Mi of J-Mi & Midi-D. The EP is rounded out by eurobeat and hyper techno remixes of “Crazy for Your Fire,” which is sung by Vandalet (who previously collaborated on “Erotic Chemistry” and “Diablo Girl”. The Hyper Techno version in particular is highly recommended. Pete has really gotten the sound down in recent years.

The EP is now up for sale on iTunes or Amazon MP3 for $7.92. Visit the official Disko Warp Facebook or Twitter for details on how to get a free download of the radio edit, available until Friday, August 17.

Saifam Speed – June 2012
Artist: Various Artists

June’s Speed releases bring us a Disko Warp remix of the Happy Paradise 2 classic, “Bang! Ready to Go,” to accompany the recent J-Mi & Midi-D remix. I kinda wonder why the chose that track out of all the Happy Paradise songs to remix. Anyway, this marks the first time Disko Warp have done a remix for Saifam. Perhaps Saifam will return the favor in the future?

Also out is a Speed cover of the Richard Marx 80s song, “Should’ve Known Better.”

SPE194 – [5:37] Should’ve Known Better (The Factory Team Speed remix) / Speedmaster

As mentioned, 2012 marks the 7th birthday of Disko Warp and also serves as a rebirth of sorts for the label. Earlier this year all of Disko Warp’s Bandcamp releases became pay-what-you-want, and I recently conducted a short interview with the head of Disko Warp himself, Pete Ellison, discussing the changes as well as the future of Disko Warp.

Switching to a “pay what you want” model is a bold move. What prompted this decision? Was it a response to piracy? A desire to spread the Disko Warp brand? Or did a monkey accidentally press the wrong button at Bandcamp?

Pete: It’s a complicated answer. At the beginning of this year I just decided it was time for a change, and I wanted to really step back and look at everything I’d done with Disko Warp and see what’s working and what’s not working. It takes money and time to maintain a large catalog of releases for sale via iTunes and other distributors. A lot of our back catalog was actually costing me money to keep it up, and my business model that was working great for me when I started the label 7 years ago just needed to be ditched completely and rebuilt from the ground up. So I’ve drawn a line in the sand so to speak.
